Desmond Cole resigned from his job at the Toronto Star after being asked to choose between his journalism and activism. He has advocated strongly around the issue of police checks, and worked with Black Lives Matter Toronto to push for an inquiry into the death of Andrew Loku.

His essay “The Skin I’m In” detailed his experience with being stopped over 50 times by police. His advocacy against racial profiling and with the school board highlights urgent areas of activism that affect our communities as well. He was recently featured in the CBC documentary Black In Canada.
