The Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute kindly invites you to participate in a pilot project, ‘Kuumba- Telling our Individual and Community Stories’.

The practice of oral story telling is a tradition that has been passed down from ancient African civilizations. This creative form of recording history, sharing struggle and triumph, has existed within the indigenous communities of Nova Scotia for centuries.

This project will bring together community elders and youth to share stories connected to their communities, and provide youth with the opportunity to illustrate the stories in art form.

The project will be comprised of 5 African Nova Scotian elders and 15 African Nova Scotian youth (ages 11 to 13) from two different regions: Halifax and Guysborough. The project will be co-delivered by rural and urban artists who will mentor and assist the youth as they depict the community stories through a variety of mediums.

Honorariums will be provided to those selected to participate. Should you require additional information please contact Chanae Parsons, DBDLI Coordinator of Youth Initiatives and Projects at chanae.parsons@dbdli.ca or 902-407-3200.

We look forward to you joining us in the Kuumba Cultural Project
